Can I get a What? What?!!??

Yarn Pr0n issues this week.

Knitpicks Shine Sport in Cherry

1st issue….why did I buy this yarn? If you peruse this blog frequently you may have noticed that this color is way outside my normal fare.

2nd issue…Damn, I can not photograph bright pink, especially when it’s kind of shiny. Any tips people?

Back to answering that first issue…

Well, I’m still not quite sure. I bought this to make Accidentally on Purpose from Stitch ‘n Bitch Nation. Another “What?!” to add there. It is really not my style. In a momentary lapse of judgment, that I somehow thought that I was an 80s punk goddess or Tori Amos, who can pull off any outfit in her awesome videos.

Okay, it wasn’t that momentary, since I debated the pattern , chose the yarn, ordered the yarn, waited a couple weeks for it to arrive, knit the whole thing, and did all the finishing. I should more accurately describe it as a prolonged lapse of judgement with many chances to turn back.

I also knit it in the completely wrong size, so that it fit like a mu-mu. In addition, I made twisted purls back then, so the stockinette parts looked quite slanted. I was still in denial though, and I wore it out to a bar, trying to convince myself about how cool I looked. I proceeded to get a stomach flu that started the next morning and lasted the next two days. Soon after that I ripped the rockin’ pink punk vest bright twisted mu-mu.

I refreshed the yarn and it has been sitting in my stash for the past year. I kept trying to think of things to knit with it, but the color was not inspiring me.

However, I have now hit on something. Combine a color I normally don’t wear and a pattern that I normally would not be drawn to, and you have a winner. (Okay, some might point out that this is what I did the first time, and it produced a loser. But it will work this time…I swear!)

I am knitting the Ogee Lace Skirt from the current Interweave. I am also not a skirt over pants girl. However, I am a skirt over swimsuit girl. And the beach is the one place that I do wear bright colors. Score!

And an answer to what I was knitting in last week’s Yarn Pr0n:

It’s the start of a Baby Bobbi Bear. And yes, I will make him arms and a second leg.

I think it will be perfect for the Ogee skirt (and Gryphon is a real sweetheart – I got to meet her at MDSW last weekend!) Looking forward to your Bobbi Bear too!

Oh, good use of that skirt! I hav eno time for the skirt-over-jeans thing–but who doesn’t love a good beach coverup? So much nicer than walking around with a owel around you, which is what I mostly do.

that is a neat idea!!! I usually just use a towel like Ashley, but every year on our beach vacation I long for something else…..I’ll have to watch progress on yours!

I can’t stop thinking about that Ogee lace either…I discarded the pattern too — to apron-like. I was considering using the lace on a scarf or a tank, but as a beach cover-up? Intriguing!

Way to recycle outside your comfort zone! As a math major, I appreciate the logical approach you took. As a creative type, you will so *hot pink rock* the Ogee!

I agree, much more glamorous than the towel approach, and the perfect use for an otherwise too-bright-for-you color. Much better use of that pattern than as a skirt for wearing over jeans.

Ah, I think you are going to turn this into a winner yet! Sounds like a great ending for the cherry yarn.

You could get a job as a stylist at IK, because your idea is so much better thatn the one pictured (I think, and clearly I am not alone). Ogee as beach cover up, brilliant….and just the sort of thing I need this summer!

Great idea! And I feel your pain with the bright red yarn photographing. Even professional photographers have issues with it, so I’m not sure there’s a lot that can be done (aside from color correcting in Photoshop).

A beach cover up is a great solution for both the yarn and the pattern. Lovin’ the smiley face, too.

That’s going to be a really cute skirt. I was looking at the pattern and thinking it was pretty but I wouldn’t wear it, but a beach skirt is perfect for it.

Great idea for the ogee skirt! Do you have any idea what I should knit with 2000 yds of Lambs Pride worsted in periwinkle? Yeah, me neither.

    Have a great weekend, Christy!

pending a few other projects being completed, i too am going to start that project with the idea of it being a beach wrap. seeing as it will be perpetually sandy, i’m thinking some yarn i could give a crap about, like cotton plus or peaches and cream. i’ll be interested to see how yours works out, good luck!

What a good idea for that yarn! I need to go get that issue. It looks good. The smiley face is funny. I think that’s the picture where the pink is truest to it’s color. By the way, I wouldn’t judge if you made a one legged teddy bear! ;D
